Why are the UK government (and others) trying to get people to confirm their indentity on social media with biometric data?

Hey! So I've been reading a lot about Online Security Bills and proposed social media laws for people to give biometric (fingerprints / eye scans etc) info to verify your ID.

https://www.biometricupdate.com/202105/uk-security-bill-to-introduce-biometric-age-verification-for-social-media-registration

Why would they do this? What would be the up and down sides of it? I feel uncomfortable giving something like Facebook that sort of data and if the government is going to introduce legislation on social media sites, maybe they could start by causing less harm instead of giving them more data.

So yeah, can someone please explain why they're doing this and the up and down sides of this move please?
