How much will the government buckle on England's tier system?

That's the question to be asking in the first part of the week.

On Tuesday, MPs vote on whether to approve the toughened up tiers that come into force after lockdown ends on Wednesday. Lots of Tories are unhappy with the measures, especially those whose constituencies are headed for tier 3.

There's no real prospect of a government defeat — Labour will probably back the motion and the SNP won't vote because the measures cover England only — but a big rebellion would be embarrassing for No 10, so concessions may be made.

Then there's another step towards banning Huawei from the UK 5G network.

The Telecommunications (Security) Bill would allow the government to do just that. It has its second reading on Monday, and will no doubt draw impassioned speeches from China hawks throughout the various stages of debate.

MONDAY 30 NOVEMBER

Telecommunications (Security) Bill - 2nd reading
Establishes a new telecoms security framework. Gives the government powers to ban Huawei's involvement in the UK's 5G network, tell big telecoms companies how to use such "high risk" vendors, and issue big fines for non-compliance.

TUESDAY 1 DECEMBER

Apologies Bill
Gives apologies an effect in certain legal contexts. Ten minute rule motion presented by John Howell.

Vote on new virus measures
MPs vote on whether to approve the toughened up tier system due to start on Wednesday.

WEDNESDAY 2 DECEMBER

Automated External Defibrillators (Public Access) Bill
Requires automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to be installed in public buildings, sports facilities, schools and other educational establishments, and places that provide care to vulnerable people. AEDs are devices that can help restart the heart in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest. Ten minute rule motion presented by Jim Shannon.
