New London Scam?

Perhaps this isn’t new, but I saw street gamblers on Westminster Bridge with the three balls and a cup trick. There were people who were betting and winning big, but I suspect they were planted by the scammers to get others to join in. I hen someone else joined in, another plant would flip over the obviously wrong cup to increase the chances for the person joining, who would then raise the bet amount as encouraged by the scammer and people in the crowd. They flip the right cup and seemingly get double their money, but they’re paid in what was probably counterfeit pounds while the scammers keep the real dollars/euros/pounds (they accepted any currency, which seemed suspicious). If you bet 50 pounds, the scammer lectures you to paying 100 and the plants in the crowd also tell you that you have to pitch 100 even though they clearly pitched 50 during their acts. Can anyone confirm these are counterfeit?
