Magic Mushrooms should never had been made illegal in 2005 - alcohol should have been.

Before 2005 you could buy psilocybin in stores throughout the United Kingdom. However a new law passed that made this substance illegal. Not only illegal, but categorised as a Class A drug, putting the fungi at the same level of criminalisation as heroin and crack cocaine.

Recent clinical trials by King's College London shows that psilocybin is completely safe for human consumption. Not only that but has been shown to have no negative effects on cognition and emotional functioning. Research into psilocybin shows that it can be used to cure depression and drug addiction!

In the UK alone, according to the Office for National Statistics, in 2018 there were 7,551 deaths related to alcohol-specific causes. To put that into perspective, only 432 deaths have been associated to cocaine use the same year.

The fact that such a dangerous and addictive drug is legal and acceptably used within our society, whilst possession of psilocybin is a criminal offence is just wrong in my opinion.

I don't actually think that alcohol should be made illegal, I don't really agree with 'the war on drugs', and don't think prohibition of another substance is a good idea, but it is interesting to see the cognitive dissonance of the majority of the UK public who are against magic mushrooms (I have received some really judgmental comments when admitting to trying them in the past) but have no problem engaging in alcohol consumption!
