How exactly would a new monarchy take control of England?

I'm just confused a bit about how Queen Elizabeth II's family came into power. I mean, did they kill a previous royal family/ousted another monarchy and replaced it with their own? Say theres a family off the street in London who wants his/her family to be the royal family and not the current one, what would need to happen? Do they need to kill certain people or cause an uprising to throw the entire royal family out? This is theoretical, of course.
